Kennel Villa Perla’s is a very small SWD home kennel in Tampere, Finland

In 2002 we lost our heart to Spanish Water Dog with our first one,
“Helmi” Herman’s Joya and she had her first litter in 2006.

At our home we have “Helmi” , her son “Onni”  and Alma from Netherland living with us. We also have two teens and a cat.
The dogs and puppies eat home-made food, mostly raw and they live among the family.
Our hobbies are agility and walking in the woods and  the dogs love to track.

Puppies are born very rarely and the important issues for me are health tests
(hips, elbows, eyes with PRA gene test and
Hypothyroidism Test)

and a
suitable character.

In 2007 Spanish Water Dog was the 40th most popular breed in Finland.
In the beginning of January 2008 there were 1705
registered  SWDs.
The most common hobbies are shows, agility and obedience.
Some dogs work as  hunting dogs and searching lost people.

We have a waterdog society and on those pages you can find breeders, puppies etc.

Health:
We may register puppies (from 1.1.07) whose parents:

*have x-ray statement of elbows

*have  x-ray statement of hips, limit HD D

* have been recently eye-tested  (no earlier than 24 months) and no HC, PRA, RD degrees 2-3
 or  PHTVL/PHPV degrees 2-6

Most breeding dogs are also tested for hypothyroidism.

The latest health tool in breeding is PRA gene test.  A few Finnish SWD have been tested
(by 01/2008) and about 1/3 of them are carriers.
So, without tests, there is a high risk of putting two carriers together and
ending up with sick puppies.
